as neededdropsred and green food coloring (optional for festive swirls)
Instructions
Begin by preparing your workspace. In a large mixing bowl, combine the powdered sugar, milk powder, and salt. Use a whisk or a fork to mix these dry ingredients thoroughly until evenly blended.
Gradually add in the peppermint syrup, light corn syrup, peppermint extract, and vanilla extract. Stir the mixture with a spatula or spoon until it starts to clump together. At this stage, the dough will be quite thick.
To achieve a soft, workable dough, add milk gradually, one tablespoon at a time, mixing well after each addition. Aim for a dough that is pliable and soft but not sticky.
Lightly dust your countertop or work surface with powdered sugar to prevent sticking. Turn the peppermint mixture out onto the surface and knead gently for about 2-3 minutes until the dough is smooth and cohesive.
If you'd like to add festive colors, divide the kneaded dough into two equal portions. Incorporate 1-2 drops of red food coloring into one half and the same amount of green into the other, kneading until the colors are fully blended throughout.
Roll each portion of colored dough into long ropes, aiming for a diameter of approximately 1/2 inch. Once rolled, gently twist the red and green ropes together to create a beautiful marbled effect. Roll the twisted dough into a long log shape.
With a sharp knife, slice the log into bite-sized pieces, each around 1 inch in length. Carefully place these peppermint pieces onto a parchment-lined baking sheet, ensuring they are spaced apart.
Allow the peppermint pieces to set at room temperature for about 12 hours, which will help them firm up. If you're in a hurry, you can refrigerate them for a quicker setting time.
Once the pieces are adequately set, generously dust them with additional powdered sugar to prevent any sticking. Store the finished peppermint delights in an airtight container to keep them fresh.
