Instructions
Begin by preheating your oven to 375°F (190°C) to prepare for baking.
Cook the ziti pasta in a large pot according to the package instructions until it's al dente. Once done, drain the pasta and set it aside for later use.
In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and minced garlic, sautéing them for about 3-5 minutes until the onion becomes translucent and fragrant.
Next, add the ground beef (or turkey) to the skillet. Cook until it’s browned and cooked through. Drain any excess fat from the skillet to keep the dish from being too greasy.
To the skillet, stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, dried oregano, dried basil, red pepper flakes, salt, and freshly cracked pepper. Allow the mixture to simmer for 10-15 minutes, letting the flavors blend beautifully.
While the sauce is simmering, take a separate bowl and combine the ricotta cheese and the egg. Mix well until fully combined and set aside.
In a large mixing bowl, fold the drained ziti into the meat sauce, ensuring that all the pasta is evenly coated with the rich sauce.
Prepare a 9x13 inch baking dish by layering half of the ziti mixture on the bottom. Spread half of the ricotta mixture over the ziti, and then sprinkle with 1 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese for that cheesy goodness.
Layer the remaining ziti mixture on top, followed by the rest of the ricotta mix, and finish off with the remaining 1 cup of mozzarella cheese. Finally, sprinkle grated Parmesan cheese generously on top for a crispy finish.
Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil (you may lightly spray the underside with cooking spray to prevent sticking) and place it in the preheated oven. Bake for 25 minutes.
After 25 minutes, carefully remove the foil and return the dish to the oven for an additional 15-20 minutes. Bake until the cheese is bubbly and has turned a delightful golden brown.
Once baked, let the ultimate ziti cool for 5-10 minutes before serving to allow it to set. Garnish with fresh basil leaves for an extra pop of color and flavor, if desired.
Notes
Serve hot and garnish with fresh basil for added flavor.
